Novice Group: Basic Skill Development

This phase is the introductory level of competitive swimming.  Focus is on fundamentals and learning strokes.  Swimmers should be able to do, at a minimum, one length back and one length free. Training Opportunities: 3 days a week

Age Group Green: Basic Training Development

This group is for swimmers who are comfortable in the water and can swim all four strokes and do some low intensity interval work.  Emphasis is on equal balance of technique work and physiological development.  Mainly for our experienced 8 and 10 & Unders.  Training Opportunities: 4 days a week

Age Group Blue: Progressive Training

This group will focus a bit more on conditioning than teaching fundamentals.  Dryland training will be introduced at this level (medicine ball work).  Low intensity aerobic conditioning will be intermixed with anaerobic threshold work.  Mainly for 12 & Over.  Training Opportunities: 5 days a week

Senior Group: Advanced Training

Swimmers with the appropriate dedication, desire, experience, and talent are invited to the advanced training level of our program at 12 years of age. The training program is very demanding with a heavy emphasis on distance based physiological training. The commitment level required at these levels of the program is very high with swimmers expected to attend at least 90% of all training sessions during the school year and 6-8 practices per week during the summer. Strength training is a standard part of the training program.  Training Opportunities: 6 days a week.

Please see a coach if you have a question regarding levels and where your swimmer should practice.

Inclement Weather Policy

Thunderstorms.  It is Camp Curtin YMCA's policy to clear the pool when a thunderstorm is in the area.  In the event a thunderstorm would interrupt swim practice, we will make every attempt to continue practice as soon as the storm passes.  In the meantime, we may move to the gym or auxiliary room to do some dryland exercises...so always make sure to bring sneakers to practice.

Snow and/or Ice Storms.  The coaches will make every effort to attend practice because we are crazy and willing to sacrifice life and limb and car to coach anyone who is brave enough to attend.  However, even we realize that some bad weather days are NOT fit to travel in.  Should we cancel practice due to bad weather, we will post this information on the website and/or send out a team-wide email.  We highly recommend that you check your email regularly on those days when snow and/or ice are forecast to fall.  If you do not hear from us, please assume that practice is ON as scheduled.
